An Interview & #Giveaway with Jennifer Blackwood

Burning Up by Jennifer Blackwood

An interview with Jennifer Blackwood, author of Burning Up. In Burning Up, unemployed schoolteacher Erin Jenkins is back in Portland, the town she hasn’t called home for more than a decade. It’s not the way she wants to spend her last days of summer: in between jobs and avoiding her mother’s snooping by escaping to the ice-cream aisle. But when the opportunity arises for her to accompany her brother’s best friend—her lifetime crush—to a wedding, summer gets a whole lot more interesting.

Q & A

I am so glad you could join us here at Romance Junkies. To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current project?

Thanks for having me! Burning Up is a firefighter romance where the heroine, Erin Jenkins, comes home for the first time in a decade. She plans on leaving as soon as her mother heals from her surgery, but then runs into her lifelong crush, Jake Bennett, AKA her brother’s best friend. One thing leads to another, and all of a sudden, she is his date to his sister’s wedding and things get a little more complicated (not to mention hot and heavy) for her.

When was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer?

I knew I wanted to be a writer when I started teaching language arts. I worked with students during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and wrote a book alongside them. I enjoyed it so much I kept writing.

Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?

I don’t remember who it was, but I saw it on a Twitter thread once. The author said that once the book is sent out to reviewers, it’s no longer yours.

Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you?

Hmmm. I like my men with flaws, but a perfect hero would be kind, supportive of his significant other, and an excellent cook. Also have a perfect 5 o’clock shadow and know his way around the bedroom.

What are some of your favorite pastimes? Do you have any hobbies or collections?

My favorite pastime is going on walks with my dog. If I’m out with her, the stress of the day melts away. I love reading, listening to audiobooks, and binge-watching shows with my husband. I collect anything Harry Potter, bookish candles, and planner supplies.

What has been your biggest adventure to date?

Dog sledding in Alaska

How do you describe yourself? How would your family and friends describe you?

My students once described me as a cheerleader on espresso. I’d say that is pretty accurate.

What project are you working on next?

The next book in the Flirting with Fire series!

Summary

Unemployed schoolteacher Erin Jenkins is back in Portland, the town she hasn’t called home for more than a decade.

Firefighter and single dad Jake Bennett has built a nice, safe wall around his heart—no romance, no getting burned. That doesn’t mean he’s ruling out a fling. Considering Erin’s visit is temporary, they’re the perfect fit for a scorching no-strings one-night stand. Or two. Or five. Until the worst thing happens: Erin and Jake are feeling more. Damn that four-letter word.

Now their hearts are on the line, and when their smoldering summer comes to a close, it’s going to be harder than ever to put out the fire.
