SILENT DEATH

Genre: Contemporary Action/Thriller

Adam Walker is one of the Company’s best field agents, a highly trained, well-honed killing machine when that’s what’s needed. But, he’s also a man of many secrets, and one of them is that he’s a ninja, one of Japan’s mythical death warriors. When another of Adam’s secrets, his lover Kiku, is killed, he turns to the one person he trusts, fellow agent Shainna Barton. While Shainna covers for him on a mission, Adam metes out his revenge, and discovers that his friendship with Shainna has a much deeper meaning that either of them ever realized…

Read an excerpt:

“Adam.” Shainna greeted him with a casual wave as he entered the large room they were ostensibly sharing as husband and wife. She gave him a discreet, but thorough perusal, feeling a combination of relief and surprise when her body didn’t respond to his presence as it usually did. At least not to the same extent, she corrected a moment later when he shut the door and dropped his case on a nearby chair. Adam Walker was one of the most dangerous men she’d ever met, and she’d been attracted to him from the minute she’d come to face to face with him. He wasn’t particularly handsome, above average height, extremely slender, ash-blond hair, even features, and the most unusual eyes she’d ever seen, their topaz light vaguely unreal, yet shockingly vivid at the same time. He had an aura about him that drew her like a moth to flame. Then she’d met Kiku, and knew as long as the other woman lived, she’d never stand a chance of becoming anything more than a working partner. Just as well, she’d decided. Her life didn’t need the complication. Now, she also noticed the unmistakable signs of strain and exhaustion that had settled into his features.

He glanced at her, his expression watchful, then tossed his jacket into the chair and crossed to take a seat on the edge of the bed.

“When do we contact Jamil?” He didn’t bother with the ritual search of the room. He hadn’t lied to the Director, he did trust Shainna–she was very good at her job.

“Not for several hours yet,” she replied as she passed him a drink and sat next to him. “I’m sorry about Kiku, Adam,” she whispered after an awkward pause.

He stared down at the drink and nodded, then he looked at her again. She had a well-earned reputation for being cold as ice–a reputation equal to his own–but she was far from indifferent to him, he suddenly realized. The sorrow in her ebony eyes was real, and he shook his head with the irony of it as he saw for the first time that he was a weakness in her heart. In a distant part of his mind, he also wondered why he hadn’t ever before seen how truly beautiful she was.

“I need your help, Shain,” he said quietly, pulling his focus back to the immediate.

She grinned in response. “I figured it was something like that.”

“Can you handle things here, alone?” He chose his words with care, still not ready to tell anyone everything about his current plans.

“We have a rogue agent. He’s not that good, so neutralizing him won’t be too difficult. Besides, Jamil will be on hand.” She shrugged with feigned lightness.

“How much do you trust Jamil?”

“Enough.” She resisted the step she wanted to make toward him, and was astounded that the imposed distance caused her something very like real pain. She pushed it away and focused on why she was in Morocco, at his request.

“How much time do you need, Adam?” she enquired after a reluctant hesitation. The tone of her voice didn’t entirely mask her worry, and she saw him reconsidering his request.

“They’re trying to say I killed her,” he confessed, sounding distracted and very distant.

That’s not all they’re saying, Adam, Shainna recalled, thinking of the newspaper she’d read, as well as the initial report that had sent DeeDee running to her the first night she’d been back in North America for over a month. Kiku had been beaten and raped, then her neck had been broken. The only suspect the police had was a mysterious stranger nobody knew anything about. There were hints of a blond stranger, a man who appeared and disappeared like a ghost in the pretty woman’s life.

“You know who’s responsible,” she surmised, adding together what little she knew of the incident and the greater understanding she had of Adam and his methods.

“Yeah,” he agreed in a whisper. “I need cover for seventy-two hours.”

She considered his words, calculating how it could be done. His intent gaze captured her attention, and she stared at him for a long time before she nodded.

“Just be sure you make it back to Tangier before the bodies turn up,” she suggested.

“I owe you one,” he smiled very slightly.

“So far,” she observed with a raised eyebrow. “I’m going to get a look at the Palace before it opens. Enjoy the room–we don’t often get first class accommodations,” she added with a grin.

When she would have risen from the bed to leave, he stopped her with a quiet, “Shain?”

That soft sound contained a thousand subtle questions and answers, and they all communicated themselves to both of the people in the room. The sizzling chemistry that had never been openly acknowledged by either of them had flared to life in the space of a heartbeat, and was now a raging inferno that was demanding attention and satiation.

With an inaudible, fearful intake of breath, she turned her gaze upward to meet his again. He touched a straying wisp of golden-colored hair and drew her head toward him, his mouth seeking hers. The contact was electric, and she raised her hands to his shoulders, intending to push him away. She didn’t want to be a diversion for his grief. He twisted enough to lean her back onto the bed, and she shuddered when his weight shifted, covered her, and his tongue grew ever more evocative as he deepened their kiss…
