 SINGLE MOM HEROINES

First off, I want to thank Romance Junkies for hosting me today. It’s a pleasure to be here.

I recently did an interview for a radio station in Great Britain and the interviewer asked me about the appeal of single moms as heroines. Are they popular because a lot of readers are single moms, and thus identify with the heroine? Are they popular because single moms are strong, appealing heroines — and the idea of a man who will love not only her but her child — is so appealing?

The heroine of my January Superromance, The Father For Her Son, is a single mom. Marlee has been raising her little boy alone for six years and her ex, Troy, now wants back into their lives. Marlee has a hard time trusting Troy, and she has a particularly hard time trusting him with their son. She’s afraid of being hurt, and even more afraid of her son being hurt.

Being a mom is one of the most important jobs in the world, and raising a child by yourself has to be one of the biggest challenges anyone can face. Yet so many women do so every day. I can’t imagine a stronger, more admirable character than a single mom.

What do you readers think — do you seek out books with single mom heroines? Do you like them? Not like them? Why or why not?

I enjoy the single mom stories. Since I was a twice divorced mother bringing up two daughters by myself I can appreciate them very much.

Yes, Gigi, that happy ending is one of the great things about romance. Life is depressing enough without reading depressing books!

I don’t specifically pick out with books with single moms. I try to pick out books that have a good plot. I just love a good story with a happy ending and with a Super Romance you know you are going to get a happy ending.

Diana, thank you so much for reading Her Christmas Wish. I’m glad you liked it.

I think single moms make appealing characters because they have to take on so much — they’re such strong women. And it makes the hero more appealing, too — there’s something special about a man who will take on a ready-made family.

I seem to read alot of books ab out single Mom’s. I don’t really pick them out on purpose but I guess I can relate more to them because I was one myself. Also there are alot of single Mom’s in this day and age, more than in past history, so it is just something we can relate to easier. I do enjoy reading them. So keep them coming. I read your book Her Christmas Wish and enjoyed it immensely. Diana

I don’t have any preference for romances with single mothers – I think as long as the story is good that it is okay with me. Happy New Year!!!
