Shirley
Martin, aka S.A. Martin, has always enjoyed reading, both fiction
and non-fiction. Several years ago, she decided to try writing
and began with short stories and essays. More ambitious, she
wrote an historical novel, since history has always been a favorite
subject and was her major at the University of Pittsburgh. Growing
up in western Pennsylvania, she is familiar with its history
and geography, subjects she has woven into her historical novel
and her time travel romance, Dream Weaver. She sold her historical
novel, High Wind Rising, to New Concepts Publishing and has
since branched out to paranormal and fantasy romances. She loves
reading and writing about vampires, time travel, and shapeshifters.
After
graduating from college, she taught school, then worked as a
flight attendant. This was an exciting job, one that gave her
the opportunity to visit many cities. She married a civil engineer
she met while based in Miami but had to quit her job since flight
attendants then were not permitted to work after marriage.
After
forty-four years of marriage, Shirley became a widow and now
lives alone with her two cats in the Birmingham, Alabama area.
She has three grown sons and two grandchildren. Besides reading
and writing, she enjoys growing orchids and other plants. Walking
is a favorite form of relaxation, and long walks often help
get her through writer's block.

The
Princess and the Curse
Nolan
Tremaine's love of telling tall tales lands him in trouble
when he enters into a wager with a stranger. Unwilling
to admit he'd never heard the land of Connachta, his pride
prompts him to accept the stranger's
challenge and he sails from his homeland to find a land
he's never heard of-in search of a sacred bell.
Disconcerted
when he discovers the bell is a belle--The Princess of
Bellarmine--Nolan quickly discovers the wager is less
important than the lady's happiness, for as far above
his station as she is, he can not help but fall in love
with her.

The
Joys of Reading
One of my favorite hobbies is reading, something I fear
is becoming a lost art in many households. In my own
library, I have scads of history books, (my major at
the University of Pittsburgh), not to mention books
on horticulture, astronomy, and especially paranormal
subjects, such as ESP, out-of-body travel, and vampires.
My paranormal tomes have given me special pleasure,
because these are subjects I like to write about in
my romance novels.

|
But
romance and fantasy novels give me as much joy as any
other reading material. There are so many great authors
to choose from; the list is endless. Some of my favorites
are Terry Brooks, Dean Koontz, Amanda Ashley, and Mary
Higgins Clark. Read novels of any genre and let your imagination
run free. Forget about the dirty clothes piling up or
those phone calls you have to make. Bury yourself in a
romance novel (maybe one of mine?), and let the rest of
the world go by.

It's
difficult to choose three to five books I enjoy the most
since there are so many books I can't do without.
I'll
start with the Bible, although I don't read it as much as
I should. As a writer, a dictionary and a thesaurus are
two must-haves for me. I often find myself checking Bartlett's
Familiar Quotations, too. But asking me to choose a few
favorite books is like asking me to stop eating. I have
scads of history books, covering the Middle Ages, the colonial
period, (especially concerning Pennsylvania history), and
World War II. Books on the Celtstheir history and
customsgive me much pleasure.
Guess you could say I'm a bookworm.

Q:
What
is the one food as a child you abhorred and refused
to eat no matter what, but now as an adult, you love
it and can't get enough of it?
Shirley:
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for that. If I disliked
a food as a child, I probably dislike it now. Liver
comes to mind, also oysters.

When
I lived in Miami, winter was my favorite time of year
because it brought a welcome relief from the heat the
rest of the year, but even then, we had very few really
cold days. Living in Birmingham now, I look forward
to autumn, when the leaves change color and a refreshing
coolness offers a good compromise between summer heat
and winter frigidity.
But
waitspring is always welcome after the arctic
days of winter. I remember growing up in Pennsylvania,
I could hardly wait for spring, when violets dotted
the meadows, and lilacs perfumed the air. I haven't
experienced springtime in Alabama yet, but I'm sure
it will bring back memories of springtime in Pennsylvania.
So
which is my favorite seasonautumn or spring? Hard
to choose!
