The Barefoot Summer by Carolyn Brown

THE BAREFOOT SUMMER by Carolyn Brown. Leaving one widow behind is unfortunate. Leaving three widows behind is just plain despicable. Oil heiress Kate Steele knew her not-so-dearly departed husband was a con man, but she’s shocked that Conrad racked up two more wives without divorcing her first. The only remnant of their miserable marriage she plans to keep is their lakeside cabin in Bootleg, Texas. Unfortunately, she’s not the only woman with that idea.

Q & A

Q&A With Carolyn Brown

1) Welcome to Romance Junkies! We are so happy to have you here today. First up, please tell us about your newest release.

Thank you for inviting me to your site to visit about The Barefoot Summer. It’s a pleasure to be here. I’m so very excited about my new release. Don’t you just love that cover? When I say three women, one husband, you probably automatically think sister wives, right? But that’s not the case in The Barefoot Summer. It’s three women who had no idea their husband was married to other women until he’s killed in a robbery gone bad and they all show up at his funeral at the same time.

2) Most romance novels have one main heroine, but The Barefoot Summer features three awesome women. Was it difficult navigating all of these ladies at the same time?

Not so much. It was an apples, oranges and grapes situation. Their personalities and motives were so different that it wasn’t difficult to keep them all going in the same direction that summer.

3) Did you end up having a favorite heroine?

Like children, they were each  my favorite at different times and circumstances. Kate was strong which made her my favorite. Jamie was sassy which appealed to me. And Amanda, well, after she faced reality, she became my favorite, too. So I guess the answer to your question is yes and yet no because they were all my friends by the end of the story.

4) The main male protagonist, Waylon, is a detective and sure that one of your heroines is up to no good. Because of his experiences, would you say that he is a pessimist at heart?

Yes, ma’am. But a little love in the heart can turn even a devout pessimist around.

5) In what way does this summer change your heroines? In what way is Waylon changed?

The ladies shoes all show what kind of people they are in the beginning of the book. Kate arrives at the cabin in high heels, Jamie shows up in cowboy boots and Amanda in flip flops. They shed their shoes, help each other get through all the pain and anger during the summer and it changes their whole outlook on life. Waylon goes from a dogged detective determined to finish his career with a closed case to realizing the real importance of life.

6) These group of characters are a bit of an odd mix without a lot in common. Do you recommend that everyone, at some time in their lives, spend time with others different from themselves? Do you have any experiences doing just this?

Oh, yes, I do. Spending time with folks in all walks of life is good for us. My parents separated when I was four years old and I spent lots of time with my blind, maternal grandmother. Mother remarried when I was twelve to a man 32 years older than she was, so I had a step brother and sister who were both in their forties. Then my father’s last wife was 37 years younger than he was. When I was forty two I had a two year old half brother and an eighty year old step sister. So believe me I spent a lot of time around people who were very, very different than I was…and looking back it has all helped me in my career.

7) What can readers expect next from you?

The Barefoot Summer kicks off a very busy year in my world. This is what the rest of the lineup looks like: Wicked Cowboy Charm Jan. 31; Talk Cowboy to Me, March 7; The Lilac Bouquet, March 28; The Toughest Cowboy in Texas, May 30; The Strawberry Hearts Diner, July 25; Lucky in Love (A reissue), Aug. 1; Long, Tall Cowboy Christmas, Sept/Oct.

Thank you again for asking me to stop by your site and visit with all y’all about my brand new book. Now let me ask you a question: Would you stay in a cabin for a whole summer with your deceased husband’s other two wives?

Summary

Leaving one widow behind is unfortunate. Leaving three widows behind is just plain despicable. Oil heiress Kate Steele knew her not-so-dearly departed husband was a con man, but she’s shocked that Conrad racked up two more wives without divorcing her first. The only remnant of their miserable marriage she plans to keep is their lakeside cabin in Bootleg, Texas. Unfortunately, she’s not the only woman with that idea.

Fiery, strong-willed Jamie wishes Conrad were still alive—so she could kill the scoundrel herself. But for their daughter’s sake, she needs that property. As does Amanda—twenty-eight, pregnant, and still weeping over the loss of her true love. On a broiling July day, all three arrive in Bootleg…with a dogged detective right behind who’s convinced that at least one of them conspired to commit murder. One momentous summer filled with revelations, quirky neighbors, and barefoot evenings on the porch offers three women the chance to make the journey from enemies to friends, and claim a bright, new beginning.
