Granny Logan’s Love Charms

Zoraida Grey’s Granny Logan is a witchy old lady who lives in deepest darkest Arkansas and on the pages of my Zoraida Grey Gothic books. She makes a living selling remedies for lumbago, bursitis, women’s problems, and other ailments along with the occasional ghost chasing and spirit cleansing. Her best sellers have always been love potions and charms.

Behind the purple door of her clapboard shack, the shelves are loaded with concoctions and conjure bags, herbs picked at midnight on Midsummer’s Eve, and elixirs brewed by the dark of the moon. If you pay her a visit on a cold winter night just before Valentines Day, you may find her rocking beside the fire, stitching a sure-fire, guaranteed love charm. It looks like a muslin doll, but if you listen close, you’ll hear Granny whisper:

A square of muslin from his shirt.

From his footprint a pinch of dirt.

A lock of hair, a fingernail.

A quiet spot to spin the spell.

Cut the cloth to form the poppet.

Sew it tight and mold the moppet.

With a straw breathe life into it.

With your lover’s soul imbue it.

Neroli and rose attar

Mixed with jasmine in a jar

Make a fine Come Hither oil–

Brings his passion to a boil.

Conjure the vision in your mind.

To you his love forever bind.

Watch the lovers spell unwind.

Yours forever, sealed and signed.

Prick the head with silver pin

If his mind you wish to win.

If the Fates you would outsmart

Plunge the pin into his heart.

Beware the danger of this glamour

Mind your words and never stammer.

Of his love, you’ll have your fill

But what can cure will sometimes kill.

In Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones, Granny’s life hangs in the balance. Black Magic may be the only way to save her. Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones is the first book in a three-book series. The next installment will be out Summer 2017 with the final book in the series available in Fall 2017.

Blurb:

Granny’s dying, but Zoraida can save her with a magic crystal of smoky quartz. Too bad the crystal is in Scotland––in a haunted castle––guarded by mind-reading, psychopathic sorcerers.

Getting inside Castle Logan is easy. Getting out––not so much. Before she can snatch the stone, Zoraida stumbles into a family feud, uncovers a wicked ancient curse, and finds herself ensorcelled by not one but two handsome Scottish witches. Up to their necks in family intrigue and smack-dab in the middle of a simmering clan war, Zoraida and her best friend Zhu discover Granny hasn’t told them everything.

Not by a long shot.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I sleep lightly so far from home. A scent of lilacs, pervasive and stifling, awakens me. The clock strikes the quarter of an unknown hour. My hand finds the cat’s still-warm nest in the blankets, but she is gone.

I open my eyes to a room filled with lavender light. A wavering figure drifts near the window with the surreal clarity of a vision. She beckons. I have no will. Obeying her, I shuck my body and become a wisp of mist in the eddying currents of space and time. Out the window we fly.

We plummet toward the courtyard. Lights from a hundred torches cast moving shadows across unkempt grasses and onto the walls of the East Tower. The Lilac Lady’s touch is glacial cold and all too real.

“See?” The word burns like dry ice on bare skin. She points to the scene below.

A seething circle of shadows gathers around a roughhewn pole in the center of the space. At the base, piles of sticks, straw, and boards form a mound. Bound to the stake is a woman. Flaxen hair reaches to her knees. She wears a shapeless white sack, pulled tight about her slender waist by rough cords. The crude gown barely hides the curves of her breasts, but she holds her head high, defiant.

I look from the bound woman to the phantasm, knowing they are the same soul. She is showing me her death. I most sincerely do not want to see it, but she pulls me closer. I steel myself for what is to come.

The bound woman surveys her accusers, haughty eyebrows arched over steel-blue eyes. A man pushes his way through the crowd. They make way, and a swell of hope grows in my heart. Surely, he will save her. He is tall and well-dressed, an aristocrat. Surely, he won’t allow this barbarous act within the castle walls.

Join Zoraida on an adventure that takes her from her quiet life in Arkansas to a haunted castle in Scotland, the home of a Voodoo priestess in New Orleans, a sacrificial site in the Yucatan Jungle, and back again—if she’s lucky. The price of a book opens the way to the magical world of Zoraida Grey.
