Our Review
Fashion and gossip magazines all tote the skinny beautiful models and Hollywood stars in today’s world. For the three girls in Kristan Higgins book, it is how others perceive you when you are overweight. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT is a totally honest and heartfelt story of three best friends who meet at a weight loss camp when they are teenagers. Years later, one of them is dying, Emerson, and she hands Marley and Georgia a sealed envelope on her death bed and asks them to promise that they will follow what’s inside.
Astonished, Marley and Georgia open it later and see that it is the list they made as teenagers, dreams they had if they each lost weight. This is an unforgettable journey between best friends, families, relatives and the world in general to accepting your own body and self-image just as it is.
GOOD LUCK WITH THAT is an emotional roller coaster about weight problems that I guarantee will make you cry. It will make you examine your own body and how secure you are in your own skin. Also, life is harsh. For some people they will coast through life without a scratch, others will encounter every bump and problem imaginable. For Marley and Georgia, it is an uphill battle to accepting their looks and problems in life. It is very sad about Emerson’s death in the beginning due to weight issues and the reader learns through Emerson’s diary her problems. Ms. Higgins also includes characters who abhor overweight individuals which unfortunately happens in real life. Marley is loved unconditionally by her family, while Georgia’s family is just the opposite. Her mom is concerned about looks and her brother is truly hateful, but her father and step-family are very caring. The author expertly examines all aspects of self-loathing, image issues, weight loss, guilt, relationship problems, and acceptance of our self. This book made me realize that I am a beautiful person inside and out. It doesn’t matter what you look like, only that you love yourself and are happy. Don’t ever give up on yourself, because life is too short, friends and family are too precious and life inevitably, goes on. How the story ends you will have to read it yourself to find out! GOOD LUCK WITH THAT is a beautiful testament to best friends and loving yourself for who you are. Count your blessings, for tomorrow is a brand-new day!
