Beautiful Aurora (Rory) Paxton, shunned by London Society eight years earlier for a moment of indiscretion, returns with a pair of borrowed red shoes to solve a mystery that could derail her half-sister’s engagement to the Duke of Whittingham. Armed with a suspicion that Lucas Vale, Marquess of Dashel, is blackmailing her step-mother, Rory convinces him that she should be his disabled Mother’s paid companion. Once ensconced in Lucas’s home, Rory sets out to discover if he is the alleged blackmailer. When Lucas discovers Rory’s true intentions, he assures her he is not the person she is after and instead agrees to help her solve the mystery and return the stolen love letters to their rightful owner.

Lucas, on the brink of his own engagement to a young woman with a dowry large enough to rescue his family from a pile of debts left by his now-deceased rake of a father, fights against his deepening attraction to Rory. Their unlikely partnership paves the way toward the discovery of their mutual feelings and whether or not they both get their happy ending.

Ms. Drake keeps her reader engaged in this highly entertaining tale of intrigue and romance. You will not be disappointed in this excellent story that has this reader hoping it really isn’t the final chapter in this series.
