Our Review

SOMEBODY LIKE YOU is the first book in a new series by Donna Alward. I can’t wait to read the next two books, SOMEONE TO LOVE and SOMEBODY’S BABY, and hope there will be even more books in the DARLING, VT series.

Aiden and Laurel have a past, some good and some bad. They meet up again when she returns to their hometown many years later to open a garden center. Sparks fly, but it’s because Laurel still can’t forget what he did to her in high school on a bet. Her anger is palpable, but they do say the opposite of hate is love. What’s the real reason she’s riled up all these years later, even after marrying and divorcing someone else? Of course, her marriage isn’t what it seemed, so there’s a lot of anger inside Laurel just waiting to be let out.

There are a lot of heartwarming moments and some heartbreaking ones too. The one’s that made me smile are Laurel’s re-connection with her mom, her relationship with best friend, Willow, the camaraderie of Aiden’s family and the small town feel and community spirit. I was sad that George, the homeless man, is treated as if he’s invisible and much worse than that too. There was so much vandalism and crime in such a small town, and Laurel and Aiden never seemed to be on the same page at the same time.

The story is filled with family and friends, hope, second chances, and love. There was nice closure and a happily ever after that took me by surprise, with some hints of what might be in future books in the series.

Alward has always been an author whose books I’ve enjoyed. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
