Q&A WITH TABITHA RHYS

LOVE, MUSIC, MADNESS is a wild ride, from the grimy Philadelphia suburb where two songwriters fall for each other and then fall apart, to Los Angeles, where both their careers depend on making a record together.

Read on to find out more about what inspired Tabitha Rhys’ debut novel.

Why new adult?

My interest in NA started with my love of YA. I love the angst, the introspection, those innocent “when my hand brushed his” moments. But I also want to know what happens to that YA hero when he grows up. What happens when he moves out and pursues a career? Gets into an adult relationship? Has to assert himself? It could get complicated. I like complicated!

What inspired you to write LOVE, MUSIC, MADNESS?

Most of my twenties were spent hanging out with local musicians in various cities on the West Coast, singing with bands, and living intermittently on the road. Tiny pieces of all those experiences spun around in my mind and came out as a brand new (and entirely fictional) tale.

Why write from the hero’s perspective?

When I read about a love interest who really intrigues me, I want to get inside his head. I figured, why not write a whole book from that place?

How did you come up with this cast of characters?

I invented early versions of my main characters in high school. (Yes, that was a long time ago.) I spent most of those years in my room, writing stories and chatting online—sometimes in character. (No, I did not catfish!)

How do you pronounce “Rhys”?

Rhymes with Reece.

Love, Music, Madness by Tabitha RhysSongwriting partners Lawson Harper and Jessa Warlow’s musical ambitions are derailed when their so-called relationship ends disastrously. However, neither is willing to give up on album’s worth of soul-searing songs they wrote together—songs they’re sure are good enough to change both their lives.

Will the chemistry that fuels their creativity drive them to make the record of a lifetime, or only to absolute madness?
