Hawaii is a place I like to visit—in books and in reality. When I wrote my second romance novel, Finder Keeper of My Heart, I knew right away that it would take place on the Big Island, my family’s favorite Hawaiian destination.
The island’s rugged beauty, pristine beaches, and breathtaking rainbows and sunsets captured the essence of the love story at the heart of Finder Keeper. The recent volcanic eruptions on the island reminded me of how fleeting time is and how lucky I am to have spent many vacations there.

Hawaii is a place I like to visit—in books and in reality. When I wrote my second romance novel, Finder Keeper of My Heart, I knew right away that it would take place on the Big Island, my family’s favorite Hawaiian destination.
The island’s rugged beauty, pristine beaches, and breathtaking rainbows and sunsets captured the essence of the love story at the heart of Finder Keeper. The recent volcanic eruptions on the island reminded me of how fleeting time is and how lucky I am to have spent many vacations there.
I would like to share with you five activities in my novel that helped develop the romance between the heroine, Emma Munroe, and hero, Avery Bell. These are excellent things to do if you are visiting the Big Island. They are also the reasons why Hawaii is the perfect setting for Finder Keeper. If you can’t escape to paradise this summer, read the novel and enjoy Hawaii vicariously!
5 Romantic Things to Do
#1 Find some quiet time by hiking. Finder Keeper begins with Emma enjoying an impromptu hike on the Muliwai Trail, but she got lost. Lucky for her, Avery was there. If you want to go hiking, you have to be more prepared than Emma. Plan your trip and go with other people, just in case there’s no Avery of your dreams to rescue you.
#2 Swim in a new beach every day. You will be surrounded by gorgeous beaches on the Big Island. The best way to explore beaches is to visit a new one every day. In Finder Keeper, Emma and Avery hung out on the beach of Anaehoomalu Bay on the Kohala Coast, one of my favorite beaches in the world. Also known as A-Bay beach, its golden sand and mild waves make it safe for swimming even for young kids.
#3 Get out of your comfort zone and learn how to ride a scooter. In Finder Keeper, Avery surprised Emma with an impromptu scooter lesson. Emma, a budding Broadway actress, channeled her inner Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and learned how to drive a scooter. You could do it, too!
#4 Launch a sea adventure. Sea adventure in the form of boating, kayaking, paddling, or canoeing is popular in Hawaii. Our romantic hero, Avery, is a triathlete who’s very comfortable kayaking. While kayaking, he realized just how much he cared for Emma.
#5 Do the luau. In Finder Keeper, Emma celebrated her twenty-first birthday with Avery and her best friends at a luau, a traditional Hawaiian feast. If you’re attending a luau for the first time, expect a memorable event that includes abundant food and great entertainment.
