Melynda, when was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer?
It was kind of happenchance. I had an idea for a book and before I knew it, characters were coming to life inside my head and having conversations. Writing sort of became a compulsion for me. It wasn’t something I’d always wanted to do, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. I love creating new characters, different worlds, and telling stories where the unbelievable becomes believable.
Welcome to Romance Junkies, Melynda. We’re so glad you could join us here today. To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current project?
Thank you for inviting me. I’ve just finished my second romantic suspense as well as the fourth book in my Against the Cage series. I’m currently writing an island romance. I wanted to do something fun and light while I plotted out my next romantic suspense. I’m nearly finished with it and will soon be diving back into the world of murder and mayhem. 😉

It wasn’t something I’d always wanted to do, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. I love creating new characters, different worlds, and telling stories where the unbelievable becomes believable.
Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?
The best advice I ever got, and the worst advice, oddly came from the same person.
The best advice was this: It only takes one yes to make your dreams come true. And she was absolutely right. These were encouraging words I’ve never forgotten. Among the sea of no’s, it only took one yes to land my fabulous agent whom I adore, and it only took one yes to contract my Against the Cage series that launched my career.
The worst advice I ever got was: Write what you love. It sounded great, and in a perfect world that would be nice, but the reality is this… The market is dynamic and always changing. What’s hot today probably won’t be hot tomorrow. You’ve got to write what readers love, and if your two interests align, then that’s great, but if you want to sell books, you’ve got to adapt to the ever-changing market. It was after I realized this that I wrote Win by Submission and landed a four-book contract.
Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you?
My perfect hero is angsty, complex, and damaged. He’s an alpha male who is imperfectly perfect. A guy that shows the world a hard-ass exterior, but the woman lucky enough to capture his heart gets to see the man beneath the surface.
What are some of your favorite pastimes? Do you have any hobbies or collections?
When I’m not writing, I love to read. Give me a good book, a glass of wine, and I’m set.
What has been your biggest adventure to date?
We take a family vacation every year, and that’s always an adventure. My favorite places so far have been Maui and Grand Cayman.
How do you describe yourself? How would your family and friends describe you?
I’m incredibly introverted. I always hoped that would change as I got older, but I find it’s getting worse. My friends and family would probably agree. 😉
What project are you working on next?
After I finish Until Autumn, the first book in my Island of Love trilogy, I plan to get started on my third romantic suspense, Vow of Silence. I’ve been working on plotting the story line and I’m looking forward to getting started on it.
