please tell us a little bit about your current projects?
Thank you for having me! My current project is a contemporary romance called Snowy Mountain Nights. It’s about a tattoo artist who, against her better judgment, finds herself falling for one of the men who ruined her life five years before – her ex-husband’s ruthless divorce lawyer. The book comes out March 1st.
Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?
That person is editor and writer, Katherine Forrest. She told me – and the others in her editing workshop – to throw away the first chapter of your completed novel, that the first chapter is usually “writing into” the story and therefore will be potentially boring to the reader. Start the book when something interesting is happening. Not when the character is walking to the beach but when he sees a mermaid rising from the water.
Describe the “perfect” hero.
My perfect romance hero is funny and flawed, able to make his heroine laugh even in the midst of dealing with his own issues throughout the novel.
What about the “perfect” hero for you? In real life, I would prefer the funny without the flaws, of course J. But having someone who makes me laugh is one of the most important things for me. Being able to laugh with your partner makes the serious things life throws at you much more bearable.
What has been your biggest adventure to date?
Traveling to Morocco last summer was my biggest adventure. It was amazing to ride a camel, walk through the narrow streets with their chaos of noise and the smell of spices and thick feel of history. The food was amazing too!
When it comes to food, are you the adventurous type who will try anything once, or do you prefer to stick to tried and true foods and recipes?
Two of my favorite things are travel and food. I like to think I’m adventurous with both, willing and ready to try anything and any place at least twice, as long as they don’t involve extreme heights or animal testicles.
What is your favorite comfort food?
I’d have to say a bowl of hot hominy corn porridge (flavored with coconut milk) and a slice or two of fresh bread. I was raised on porridge in Jamaica and nothing else says home and comfort to me.
What is your favorite season? What do you love about it?
I love summer. That’s when cities break out many of their festivals, people get half-naked, and all the pools are open. Cities that get extreme winters are especially fun during the summertime. The people who live there celebrate the season so passionately and wholeheartedly, like they’ll never have the chance to be warm again.
What is this romance writer’s idea of the “ideal romantic evening”?
It’s hard to say since one of my favorite things about romantic evenings planned by someone else is the surprise of it. I’m excited by the idea of whatever my date thinks of as romantic – whether it’s a midnight dinner cruise, a night in with candle-light and rose petals, or an impromptu trip to New York for dinner and a show. The effort in the surprise is half my pleasure.
What project are you working on next?
My next project is a novel set in Miami, Morocco, and Paris called An Affair of Pleasure. It explores the relationship between childhood friends and current business partners who find themselves pretending to be married in order to win over a potential client.
