Amy Aislin's THE HEIGHTS
Amy Aislin THE HEIGHTS
Twenty-one years ago, a four-year old child was kidnapped from his front yard. He was never found. Until now.
All Nat Walker wants is to make his late father’s dream of running a father/son woodworking shop come true. And he had the perfect building in mind—until the new guy in town came in and bought the place right out from under him. The fact that the new guy is adorable means nothing. For all Nat cares, he can take his new dance studio and waltz back to New York City.
Professional dancer Quinn Carroll couldn’t be happier that he made the move to the small town of Lakeshore, Oregon. Sure, it’s not New York, but now he’ll be living closer to his adoptive brother. And since his studio will be the only one in the area, he should get enough business to keep him busy. Besides, there’s something about this place that seems familiar…
Thank you for joining me to celebrate the release of my newest m/m contemporary romance, The Heights, and thank you to Romance Junkies for having me!
The Heights is a labour of love and it was quite the process getting this story released. I originally wrote this book in the summer of 2016. It was the first book I ever wrote that I actually finished. Everything else I’d started had sat around untouched for years because I couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters.
Eventually I realized it was because I was writing m/f romance, and it wasn’t clicking for me. I finally found my writer voice when I wrote my first m/m romance: The Heights.
At the time that I wrote it, however, it wasn’t ready for publication. I liked it, but there was something that wasn’t working and I couldn’t figure out what that was. Beta reader feedback was all over the place, ranging from “I loved it!” to “I couldn’t get past 30%” to “It wasn’t bad, but your sequence of events is all wrong.” Frankly, as I look back on it now, I can admit that the first daft of The Heights was much too long (clocking in at 103,000 words), much too slow, and nothing happened until 60% into the novel. But I didn’t know how to fix it.
So I put it aside. And then I wrote something else. And then something else. And then, all of a sudden, it was January 2018 and I had written five new books and released four of them, with the fifth due for release in May. And my main characters from The Heights, Quinn and Nat, started speaking to me again. But I didn’t want to go back to my original 103,000-word draft. Fixing that up seemed like an epically daunting task. So I started fresh.
The overall storyline is essentially the same. The setting is the same. The characters are the same. What changed was the entire sequence of events, which resulted in much tighter writing, more dynamic characters, and a finished product I’m so proud of. This book, the published version that comes out tomorrow, is so different from my original draft that I hardly used anything from the original except some character and setting descriptions.
The Heights comes out tomorrow, September 20, and you can pre-order at Amazon, iBooks, B&N, and Kobo.

He doesn’t expect to fall hard for the local, grumpy woodworker who won’t even smile at him.
Or find out that his entire life is a lie.
