Little Gray Dress by Aimee Brown
Q&A with Aimee Brown, author of Little Gray Dress.
Emi Harrison has avoided her ex-fiance, Jack Cabot, for nearly two years. Her twin brother Evan’s wedding is about to end that streak.
From bad bridesmaid’s dresses, a hyperactive sister-in-law, a mean girl with even meaner secrets, and too much to drink, nothing seems to go right for Emi, except when she’s wearing her little gray dress.
I am so glad you could join us here at Romance Junkies. To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current projects? Hello & thank you so much for having me! Right now, I’m just about ½ way through a manuscript about a girl who finds the man she just knows is supposed to be the love of her life in the last place she expects, a funeral! But, will he feel the same way?
When was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer? When my kids were toddlers I did a lot of reading. I read all kinds of genres not really loving any until I found Sophie Kinsella. The second I read that first shopaholic book, I was hooked and I knew I had to summon my own Sophie Kinsella from within.
Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day? Stephen King says in his book about writing to ‘allow yourself to write badly’ or something along those lines. I’m a perfectionist at heart so I hate moving on to anything without knowing what I just finished (or wrote) was perfect, or as perfect as I could get it. Because of that, I’ve been attempting to write my first novel for the better part of ten years. Finally, this last NaNoWriMo I somehow was able to take that advice to heart and just write, without focusing on what I’d just written or just how bad it might really be.
Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you? The perfect hero is someone who can make you fall in love within the first few lines he speaks. For me, he’s normally someone with manners but personality. I miss that old school guy who holds open your car door and allows you to walk just a step ahead of him.
What are some of your favorite pastimes? Do you have any hobbies or collections? I heard one time when I was young that if you have three of something it’s considered a ‘collection’. So, with that in mind, I apparently collect children, cats, dogs, globes, vintage homestuff, and a whole list of crap. I love to decorate (and redecorate) my home, usually with things I’ve found while thrifting. I document my collections on my Instagram account (@authoraimeeb) but really, the hunt of the perfect unexpected item, is always the most fun.
What has been your biggest adventure to date? Being a parent. My kids aren’t really kids anymore, my oldest is 19, my middle is 18 and my youngest is 13. No one tells you when you have a baby that in 17ish years you’ll give anything to go back to those baby/toddler stages no matter how hard they might have seemed. As you get closer to your child hitting adulthood it seems to hit you like a brick that you’ve spent all these years raising them up to leave you at some point. That has been really hard for me and I’d consider that journey my biggest adventure in life. There are times when I wish I could have another baby just so I’d always have a tiny self made best friend around.
If your fairy godmother waved her wand and whisked you away to the location of your choice, which place would you choose, and why? I’d definitely choose someplace warm on a beach, with palm trees, flamingoes, peace and quiet and a cabana boy continually filling up my apple martinis.
When it comes to food, are you the adventurous type who will try anything once, or do you prefer to stick to tried and true foods and recipes? I’m a total weenie when it comes to food. I don’t like new things, I don’t love spices, I don’t love new recipes, I really just prefer things I know I love. I’m pretty plain jane when it comes to food.
What is the one modern convenience that you cannot do without? Google! I’m such a Googler (is that even a word?). I read everything and I’ve been known to find info that others haven’t been successful at. I seriously wonder how I ever made it through high school without Google! I’m definitely the generation saying ‘back in my day, we had to actually know how to use a card catalog in the library to find out information’.
What is your idea of the ideal romantic evening? Hmmm… I’ve been married over 20 years so romantic evenings aren’t what they used to be. A romantic evening for me at this point is having food I didn’t have to cook delivered to me and not having to do the dishes afterward.
How do you describe yourself? How would your family and friends describe you? If I had to describe myself I’d say I’m funny, sarcastic and inappropriate yet responsible. If my friends and family were to describe me they’d say I’m funny, sarcastic, inappropriate but polite when the situation calls for it.
What is your favorite comfort food? Thanksgiving! Or anything my mom used to make.
What is your favorite season? What do you love about it? I’m a summer girl. Granted, I’m not a huge outdoors girl at all, but when I am outside I’d really rather it not be -45 degrees as it is in the winter in Montana where I live. I love the sun, humidity, and green leafy plants.
What project are you working on next? I’ve got a few things up my sleeve but for now I’m focusing on finishing this next manuscript. I think you all will love it, it’s fun, funny, and romantic.
Any place we can find you in person or on the net this month or next? I’m the queen of social media use… lol I’m always around on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Sadly, I live in a state that could care less about romance books so I won’t be anywhere local soon. ?
Thanks again for blogging with us!
Thank you so much for having me! Your questions were such fun!

When she speed-walks into Liam Jaxon’s bar, things get more complicated. He’s gorgeous, southern, and has no past with Emi. He may be exactly what she needs to prove for the last time that she doesn’t need or want Jack!
