Still reeling from a nasty divorce, Melanie Cruz’s pride takes another beating when she loses her enviable job at an upscale resort. After a flurry of unsuccessful interviews, she finally—desperately—accepts a job managing a small chain of family-owned pizzerias in a quaint downtown Phoenix neighborhood. Q & A

An interview with Cora Brent

I am so glad you could join us here at Romance Junkies. To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current project?

Thank you so much for the opportunity to be here.  My new book, Fired, is a fun, sexy workplace romance, releasing October 31.

When was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer? Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?

It seems I’ve always wanted to be a writer although I vaguely recall a brief period in fourth grade when I aspired to be Madonna. When I was seven years old my mother gave me a blank journal. I wrote in it for the first time after playing outside in the snow. I couldn’t wait to describe how it felt, the euphoria of being the first one to step into a carpet of fresh snow in the backyard, the wonder of discovering a line of bird tracks. That was the moment I realized I was in love with words. I still am. The one piece of writing advice that has stuck with me throughout the years comes, strangely enough, from Billy Crystal’s character in Throw Momma From the Train’ when he informs his class, “A writer writes. Always.”

Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you?

A sense of humor is a requirement, along with honesty and intelligence. Of course a sexy smile and a set of broad shoulders help seal the deal. My ‘perfect’ hero is also a homebody who loves kids and animals and prefers snuggling on the couch on Saturday night.

What are some of your favorite pastimes? Do you have any hobbies or collections?

I’m a lifelong compulsive reader. I love museums. I learned how to crochet when I was a teenager and every once in a while I begin a new project from my extensive yarn stash. Currently I am harboring about two dozen unfinished projects in a second floor linen closet but I try not to feel too bad about that. I’ve tried to knit. I’m not good at it.  Also, I collect antique handwritten diaries, old love letters and World War 2 memorabilia. One of my favorite collection pieces is a personal scrapbook faithfully kept by a young bride while her new husband was fighting in Europe.

What has been your biggest adventure to date?

Motherhood. When my infant daughter was presented to me I didn’t even know how to change a diaper. I was amazed the hosptal was encouraging me to take her home. She’s a healthy, happy high school student now so I suppose the hospital was right.

How do you describe yourself? How would your family and friends describe you?

I’m quiet, often messy, occasionally stubborn and a terrible dresser.  But I’m loyal and there’s nothing I won’t do for the people I love.

What project are you working on next?

I’m finishing up the next book in my Gentry Generations series and then will be diving right into a stand alone single dad romance.

Author Biography

Cora Brent is the USA Today and New York Times bestselling author of the Gentry Boys series. She was born in a cold climate but escaped as soon as it was legally possible. These days, she lives in the Arizona desert with her husband, two kids, and a prickly pear cactus she has affectionately named “Spot.” Cora’s closet is filled with boxes of unfinished stories that date back to her 1980s childhood (someday she fully intends to finish her first masterpiece about a pink horse that plays baseball), but in the meantime, she’s consumed with her romance novels.
