Our Review

MALICE by Heather Walter, is a dark retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

Briar is a world filled with magic. The Graces live to serve the elite making potions to improve one’s looks, singing voice, love potions etc. Except for the grace who is Alyce. She is the dark Grace. She is abhorred by upper society, but still requested to wreak havoc on fellow folk. Her magic is dark and twisted like the green veins that run through her body. She is called upon to make tinctures to cause disease, warts, limps and sometimes death.  Alyce hates it, she wishes she could do good.

Then Alyce meets her royal highness, Aurora…who sees past the evil.

Alyce and Princess Aurora work on finding a solution to the curse which does not require a kiss. Aurora will die on her 21stbirthday unless she receives a kiss from her hearts true love.

Alyce and Aurora are determined to escape their respective cages.  Two unlikely people are brought together by a similar purpose: a yearning to be free and fall in love.

This is the story of a wicked villain. She is not vindicated, nor does she have any good qualities. The ending is explosive, dark and hopeless.  The curse has yet to be broken.

I recommend this book, and will read the next to see what happens.

The next book continues the story,  MISRULE.
