Meet the Heroine From Unstrung and the Three Men In Her Life with Laura Spinella

What’s in a name? Well, a lot if you’re Olivia Klein Van Doren from my new release Unstrung. It’s how the police have her on file, from the night of her arrest after beating her husband’s Porsche with a baseball bat. Rob, a financier, owner of the beaten Porsche and husband calls her Liv. It’s spoken with familiarity, though it can be said cuttingly, like in the heat of an argument. As you might guess, lately, arguments are more common than not in the Van Doren’s tony Boston brownstone.

On the other hand, if “Livy” echoes across a room, be sure Sam Nash is in town. The baseball legend was our protagonist’s first husband. It’s how the Southern born Sam referred to her, but Sam himself will admit to falling short on the gentleman part of that idiom.

Throughout her life, Olivia has heard her name uttered in a shrill sound; it elicits feelings that drive much of our heroine’s choices. One would think at forty-six, as successful violinist with the New England Symphony, your mother’s judgmental tone would be a moot point. Not quite. Not if she’s still trying to force you into a mold that’s always been a poor fit, and your father’s expectations have lived on long after his death.

Better, and most intriguing to Olivia, is the way Theo McAdams says her name. It could be because musically they are simpatico, Theo being her other half in a creative sense. But it also could be the idea of Theo McAdams being a part of her life, a relationship Olivia never envisioned.

In Unstrung, it’s the untimely convergence of all three men, with her mother hovering, which drives Olivia one note from the edge. Can she find a way back? Is Sam Nash’s unexpected return the thing that will bring peace to Olivia’s topsy-turvy life? Or could it be Theo McAdams? His affect is profound and his presence unlikely. Olivia Klein certainly never anticipated serving community service hours in his classroom. Theo could be her saving grace, or he may simply expose all the things Olivia keeps so carefully hidden.

Certainly, there’s not much chance of Rob holding the keys to happiness. He doesn’t even have keys to his Porsche anymore. But what can Olivia expect from an already shaky marriage, one that is about to hit a landmine even Olivia couldn’t imagine.

Rob, Sam, Theo will influence Olivia’s life. One man is her past, one is a secret, and the other is her future. On February 21 readers can find out who’s who in Unstrung, a novel Publishers Weekly names among its “most notable and anticipated novels for spring. Thanks so much for popping in for a sneak peek of Unstrung
