Romance Junkies Book Reviews

Thanks for joining us, Loreth! We’re so glad to have you here at Romance Junkies today.  To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current projects?

Thank you so much for having me! At the moment, I have IN THE BARREN GROUND releasing from Montlake Romance. It’s the story of young, rookie cop, Tana Larsson, who is driven by her past mistakes to take a post in the far north, close to the Arctic Circle—a place where darkness consumes the winter, and where humans are scarce, and predators roam freely. And when she comes across a brutal crime that becomes steeped in local lore, she is forced to enlist the help of a rogue bush pilot who is not quite what he seems. It’s a dark, gritty suspense, with romance, and undertones of horror.

When was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer?

I don’t believe there was a moment where I actually made a conscious bid to become a writer. I was foremost a reader. I devoured books from a very early age. English was my favorite subject at school. I loved the assigned material, everything from Austin, to Shakespeare, to DH Lawrence and more. This led me into university English, and into a journalism career. However, there came a day when I decided it might be a lot more fun making up stories than trying to relate the truth. LOL, I have since learned there is a lot more truth to be found in fiction than in the news.

Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?

There are so many nuggets of advice that I love, from so many different writers. However, there is one snippet that pulls me through each and every time I get really stuck inside my head: You can fix a bad page, but you can’t fix a blank page. And I believe that comes from Nora Roberts.

Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you?

I don’t believe in such a thing as a ‘perfect’ hero. I believe heroes are in the eyes of the beholder, and that there are as many heroes as there are different people and belief systems in this world.

What are some of your favorite pastimes? Do you have any hobbies or collections?

I have a passion for the outdoors, and for long distance open water swimming, particularly in the ocean. The sea is my happy place ☺  However, I live in the mountains, so next best is spending some time each day with my dog on the mountain trails. I run with him, and in winter we cross-country ski together daily. Heading off camping with my fly fisher husband is another of my special pastimes. And reading of course!

What has been your biggest adventure to date?

Being a mom ☺

How do you describe yourself? How would your family and friends describe you?

Hah, this reminds me of those photos that come with captions like: This is what you think you look like. But this is what you really look like ☺  Let’s see … I suspect the consensus would be: I’m introspective. A contrarian. I’m empathetic, and a deep thinker—I mull things over from every which way, trying to see all angles and perspectives. I am completely happy spending long periods of time on my own before I need company again (this is a very helpful trait for a novelist, I might add!) And sunshine makes me happy ☺ Almost always.

What project are you working on next?

Oooh, I’m totally psyched by my current work in progress! It’s the first in a new three-book series called THE DROWNED GIRLS–An Angie Pallorino novel. It’s a darkly gritty, sexy female-driven police procedural series with a romantic arc that develops over three books. The first book releases in late spring next year.

Genre: Romantic Thriller

In the Barrens, a vast wilderness in northern Canada bordering the Arctic Circle, night consumes every hour of the winter. Humans are scarce; ferocious predators roam freely. Locals say spirits do, too.

Rookie cop Tana Larsson doesn’t mind the dark and quiet. Five months pregnant and hoping to escape the mistakes of her past, she takes a post in Twin Rivers, population 320. Maybe here she can find peace and community for her child.

But with her superior out of commission, Tana becomes the sole police officer in 17,500 square miles. One bitter night, she gets a call about the fatal wolf mauling of two students, and the only way to reach the remote scene is to enlist the help of the arrogant, irritatingly handsome Cameron “Crash” O’Halloran, a local bush pilot with a shady reputation for smuggling and a past cloaked in shadow.

When the macabre scene they uncover suggests violence much more sinister than animal, Tana must trust Crash if she wants to protect the town—and herself—from the evil that lurks in the frozen dark.
